Anyone that knows me knows that I love sports! I have been involved in sports since the age of five when I began playing baseball. As you can see by the logos above, I am a Philadelphia fan. I love the Philly sports teams. I must say the past years have been very good for Philly fans. The Flyers, Sixers, and Eagles have been successful. Each of those teams have made the playoffs for the past 4 years. This year has been a little different though with the Sixers missing the playoffs.
Philadelphia Eagles
Unfortunately our Eagles have let us down the past 3 years by losing in the NFC Championship game. This year was the most disappointing. I think it made everyone more angry though. I know I now see that it could not be more obvious that they need to upgrade at the wide reciever position. When your number one wide out gets held to no catches and totally embarrased by a rookie in the NFC Championship game, who ealier in the week was talking trash, there is obviously a problem. Thankfully, all of us Eagles fans got our wish! The Eagles finally came to realize that they needed to upgrade the reciever position. After an up and down series of events the Eagles finally got their guy. The guy I am referring to would be none other then...Terrell Owens. T.O. expressed his desire to come to play for the Eagles as soon as he became a free agent. He made it clear that Philly was his first choice. He was given the run-around by his former team, the San Francisco 49er's. Luckily, it all worked out in the end for the Eagles. Now they have one of the best recievers in the league for McNabb to throw to. Someone who will catch the ball when it's thrown to him! Let's not forget about the signing of Jevon Kearse. I think he will prove to be an awesome addition to that defense. He will make the secondary better by getting to the quarterback very quickly. I'm looking forward to next season...even though it's still a while away.
Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies have now proven that they are 100% devoted to winning the World Series. The moves they have made in the past 2 years have been great ones. They made what is possibly the best free agent signing in franchise history last season by adding Jim Thome. He proved in his first season as Phillie that he was definitely what the team needed. They had their best season in while last year finishing the season with a winning record. They became exciting to watch again because they stayed in the race for a playoff spot deep into the season. This season should be even more exciting. We say goodbye to Veterans Stadium, how sad, and hello to Citizen Ballpark. The new ballpark promises to be one the best and nicest in Major League Baseball. Pat Burrell will hopefully come into this season with something prove. Last season he did not do well, batting a mere .209 with 21 homeruns. If he can play at level he is capable of, their lineup with be very strong. They also adding more pitching. One of the more notable additions is left handed reliever Billy Wagner. He is one of the best closers in the league throwing speeds of 100 mph. One his set up men will be newly acquired Tim Worrell who was a closer last season. Also, they will use Rheal Cormier to set up Wagner as well. Cormier is coming off of his best season as reliever. They also added a new starter in Eric Milton and resigned Kevin Millwood. I am very excited to see how this team does this season. I feel they have a very good chance at making it to the World Series!
Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers are now finished with their season. I must say that I am disappointed that they didn't make it to the Stanley Cup Finals. I think that their age caught up with them. They just did not seem to have that jump in their step in game 7. They were one step behind on almost every play. Not knowing what the future holds for the Flyers, or the league for that matter, bothers me. There might not even be a season come September. If there is a season, what exactly will this Flyers team look like. You can count on the fact that it will not be the same team. There are many free agents on this team and they cannot all resign. With talks of a salary cap, the Flyers will be one of the teams that suffers if this is put into effect. The Flyers have a payroll of around $70 million, the proposed salary cap would be around $30 - $40 million.
I will say this though, I am very proud to be a Flyers fan after this season. Yes, the dreaded Philly curse of not winning a championship continues, but this team still gave all it had. Whoever thought Primeau would step up and play the way he did. Roenick played so hurt in those finals games, but he never once complained. This team had more guts than any team I have ever seen. I will always br grateful for the effort they put forward and for making me have so much passion for one team.
Philadelphia 76er's
I don't really know what to say about the Sixers. They had a very disappointing season. It is partly because they were hammered with injuries once again. Their lack of size in the post and terrible defense made them one of the worst teams in the NBA. Even though they have Allen Iverson, they still finished below the .500 mark. This has been one of AI's worst seasons. Not only did he miss the most games of his career, he also did way too much complaining. I have always backed AI, even when he did stupid things. The way this past season went though, I have a hard time doing that. There has been much speculation that he will be traded, and I somewhat agree. Tracy McGrady might be traded, I think getting him would be great. I think team needs a change, and I think T-Mac would be a nice addition. I don't think the Sixers will get rid of Iverson however. Recent changes have been made on the team and Billy King has said that they plan on Keeping AI.
The Sixers made their first move of the offseason with the hiring of coach Jim O'Brien. He had a good run while with the Boston Celtics, advancing them to the NBA Eastern Conference Finals. His coaching style is somewhat like Larry Brown's. He focuses on defense first. That will be something the Sixers need, since their D has gotten worse each season. O'Brien does like for his team to shoot the three-ball though. This is something that coach Brown did not like at all. O'Brien has already said he has no problem with coaching AI and looks forward to it. The question is...how long will it take before these two go at it. I guess we will have to and see.
